Camping Guide for Family Camping Hiking and Backpackers

Planning car camping, hiking or backpacking adventures is a great experience when the end result is something we thoroughly enjoyed. Preparation is the key to a successful trip. Taking the wrong gear, arriving at an unsuitable campground, getting wet or cold and generally being unprepared happens often. However a simple camping guide and list of things to do, makes a camp experience much more fun.

Where to go camping? You may already be aware of where you plan to go camping? Many people are unsure of best place to go camping with kids, pets or a disabled person for example. There are many campgrounds to choose from that are suitable for all. Start with researching the internet of course or a guide book. Search by asking google for best campsite directories or best campground directories. There is no difference between a campground or campsite, It's just a matter of different words used for the EU and USA. Try reviewing the top 10 google results; They should be the best website to use Each campsite should list what is available for the place and surrounding area you plan to camp. If your unsure telephone them to enquire what is available.

There is more research to be done if going hiking in the backcountry or treking. Making the right preparation, where you are allowed to set up and safety are important for your well being and enjoyment.

What to bring camping? After planning where I am going I prepare a camping checklist of items I need to take. One list for camping gear and another for camping food if I am planning a trip with my children. I check what item's I have and check the costs of the items I need. Setting a budget or allowance. Everyone's needs are completely different, some want only camping essentials for hiking and backpacking, others want to make a holiday home for the week for the family. Nothing wrong with either, both can be thoroughly enjoyable. If I need a new camping tent or other gear, I already know the best on the market for specific trips and weather conditions. You may not know the best and need advice. Again google is your research companion and will help. Maybe check out a few camping websites, bookmark them and seek essential advice from them.

The time of year: (seasons camping) Preparation for the weather is something to consider. The end of fall or the end of spring provides a variation of weather that we can be unprepared for. Early in the morning until midday and after 4pm change dramatically, from 18c-7c. Prepare the right outdoor clothing to take, consider what second layer of clothing and warm weather clothing will be suitable.

Having fun: Family camping is great, saving money and spending quality time with the kids are only two major benefits. I have always made camping special for my children by planning activities we could do for fun , taking them on small trails but more important, giving them quality time without the outside noise of work, commitments or money issues.

I am not a fastpacking guy, although is looks challenging and tempting to try. I used to be very serious about the time I completed a hiking trail and how challenging I could make it. I would take the enjoyment out of the trip. I now keep it simple and just enjoy 1 boot in front of the other, at a time. If hiking I now try to make sure I go with an attitude of fun and enjoyment. Seeing the beautiful landscapes has been a real treasure.
